『거룩한 전쟁』은 영국의 청교도 작가로서 『천로역정』을 통해 널리 알려진 존 번연의 또 하나의 명작으로 샤다이왕과 그의 아들 임마누엘 왕자가 디아볼루스를 상대로 벌인 성스러운 전쟁, 〈인간 영혼 마을〉을 되찾기 위한 전쟁, 즉 〈인간 영혼 마을〉의 패배와 재탈환을 그린 소설이다. 우화(알레고리) 형식으로 쓰인 이 소설은 인간의 영혼 안에 벌어지는 치열한 영적 전쟁을 구속의 드라마를 배경으로 그려 내고 있다.
